Sunrise wedding

Hi guys

There is nothing nicer in this whole wide world then seeing the sunrise BUT sometimes due to weather conditions it doesn't happen! My sunrise wedding at Port Stephens on Dutchmans beach last Sunday week was one of those occasions.It was overcast and the sky looked angry.
Never the less my Bride and Groom shone brightly. He had tears of happiness in his eyes when she walked down the aisle. All the guests applauded and welcomed the happy couple. This ceremony was all about ritual and bright colours and the love of the beach and friends and family so it didn't matter that we didn't see the sun rise, we saw a beautiful couple unite as one through ritual and beautiful words spoken.
I will never forget this sun rise wedding especially since I had to get out of bed at 2.30am in the morning... hey it was all worth it!

All things weddings and other stuff!

hey guys

I would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year, one that is filled with much happiness and memorable moments. 2012 for me has started in a joyous way. My diary is filling up with Weddings and Namings. I am also looking forward to my trip to Tamworth late January to once again experience the country music festival. My first visit was last year and loved every minute of my stay. If you love dancing, meeting new people and seeing some of the best country artists in Australia and also enjoy having a drink or two or three then go to Tamworth!

At this point I would just like to tell you about my last wedding for the year which was on New Years Eve at 4.30pm on the foreshore at Blue Bay. It was lovely. The weather was perfect and as the bride walked down the stairs and onto the beach and then the rock platform escorted by her father the sixteen guests milled around closer for the start of the ceremony. A memorial candle was lit in memory of the groom's father who had passed away. A ring warming before the exchange of rings and a unity sand ritual between the couple was also a special part of the ceremony but I think what made it very special was the couple's first dance.

It's not often that the couple dance together directly after the ceremony finishes, I have only had one other couple do the same thing and their dance was in a park at 11.30am in front of 30 guests. At their wedding as with this one the guests joined in as well which made me quite emotional. It was vey moving and one of those moments that I will always remember and I am sure the guests will as well.

I might have started a new trend. The bridal waltz at the ceremony and not later in the evening after dinner,speeches and cutting of the cake. You never know!

All my ceremonies are individual and warm and personal so what ever the couples want I make sure that I will not let them down by giving them a lovely professional crafted ceremony, one that they will remember and one that their family and friends will comment later on at how nice the ceremony was. That makes me a very happy Celebrant!

Once again guys I hope this year is a great year for every one. Time marches by so quickly so enjoy each day.

"Little Bag of Love"

hey guys,

A few weeks until Christmas and a few more weddings to officiate before the New Year. I have been so busy of late and I am very thankful as well for the opportunity to have met so many wonderful couples and in turn have referred me to their friends so I must be doing something right! I really love my chosen career as a Civil Marriage Celebrant.

I would now like to share with everyone something that one of my young clients gave as their Bombadierre. I loved it so much that I made up some and gave to my Celebrant Class of 2005 at our Xmas get together which was last Friday at Potters Brewery Resort at Nulkaba. The girls loved it! I also am making some "little bags of love" for my Line Dancing friends. Our party is next Wednesday. There will be some toe tapping done that day.

50th Wedding Anniversary

Hi guys

The weather has been wonderful the past couple of days. Let's hope that it stays that way for all of my celebrations over the weekend and of course for anyone that is celebrating a wedding, birthday or just having a picnic down by the lake. There is nothing nicer then to be out in the open and feeling alive! Not that we don't whilst we are inside but over the winter months we don't feel like getting out & about because it's too wet, cold & miserable. Make hast whilst the sun shines! That's what I say.

I was privileged to be invited to a 50th anniversary dinner last Monday night. The couple are on my bingo table and are always together and the past years have been spending most of their time going on cruises together. John will be celebrating his 70th birthday in December so together with his family and friends will be having another wonderful night.

I wrote something for John & Norma which was very appropriate for them and I read it out that evening. I would like to share it with you now.

Fifty years together is a mountain

Congratulations John & Norma you’ve made it together through five decades, umpteenth thousand days, but well whose counting (18250) & in minutes (26,280,000)
Fifty years together is a mountain in which many of us would not wish to climb.
Each year your journey together has been represented by a different named anniversary.

The first represented Paper, the 7th year was Wool, and the13th year was Lace. Your 20th year represented China, your 21st was Brass, your 27th Sculpture and your 29th wedding anniversary represented New Furniture.
Your 39th was lace (again) but I am going to change it to BINGO!
Your 41st was land & your 42nd was real estate.
I think John & Norma are still celebrating their 43rd Anniversary as this year represents Travel!
Your 46th anniversary represents Poetry and your 50th Anniversary as we all know represents “GOLD”!
Back in the day, way back in the day in Medieval Germany a husband would crown his wife in either Silver for their 25th Wedding Anniversary or on their 50th he would crown her in a Gold wreath. This symbolises harmony!
Your love and your lives together
are as a beautiful sonnet from beginning to end
sweet notes, meaningful words that mean so much as the years pass by.
A half a century of life together
and that mountain ever so high splendid in it's form,
in it's shape and close to heaven,
Splendidly unmoved by passing storms.
To quote an old Chinese proverb
An inch of time is an inch of gold but you can’t buy that inch of time with an inch of gold
John & Norma your time together is worth every inch of gold and all of us here tonight are so glad that you are able to spend some inches of time with us.

Please raise your glasses and toast the couple that have climbed a mountain together
Happy 50th Anniversary kids!

John and Norma loved the special reading I did for them and now proudly have it in a frame for all to see. I was happy to be able to a part of their celebration and hopefully will be able to do something for their 60th Anniversary!

Late Brides

Hi guys,

Well it's been awhile since my last blog. A few reasons being that it is Spring time and lots of Spring weddings although someone should tell the weather as it seems like we are still experiencing Winter.

Secondly I have had laryngitis. Not good for a person in my profession. I have been able to rest my voice on those not so busy days and after taking packets of Difflam tablets, the berry flavoured ones are my fav I am on the mend. All the barracking for my NRL team Manly the past few weekends would not have helped my voice but how good were they in the Grand Final. Loved every minute of it. We are the premiers!

Thirdly I have so many ceremonies in the next few months that I haven't had time to blog! That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

Well here goes and what prompted me to write about this topic is that the past two weeks I have had two brides that have been late to their ceremony. I think that this behaviour is very rude and very inconsiderate, not only to me but to their guests to their photographer to the reception staff to the MC to the Disc Jockey and even to the Limousine driver who is waiting to drive the couple to after ceremony photo shoots.

There is nothing "Fashionable" about being late to your wedding. In fact it is "rude and selfish". If your wedding was scheduled at 3pm then that is when you should arrive. I would always ask my brides to put on their invitation the ceremony arrival being 15 minutes before the actual time. Therefore the guests think that the ceremony start time is just that so when the bride arrives they think she is 15 minutes late but she really is on time.

That wasn't the case with my two late weddings. On both occasions it was just over an hours wait and all I was concerned about were the guests, the elderly ones! And also myself. On these occasions I did not have another commitment but if I did then I would have had to leave after my contractual waiting time of fifteen minutes.In that case I would have had to come back to officiate the ceremony which I am sure would not be the same as if the bride had of turned up on time in the first place.It would be very embarrassing.

Patience is a virtue they say but I also say punctuality is a virtue as well. those that waited for my late brides were very patient but I could see their patience wearing thin as mine was.

But when they finally arrived I put my Celebrant face on and officiated two beautiful weddings. Forgetting the rings in one of those ceremonies is another story.

Spring time is Wedding time

Hi guys, Spring is in the air and what wonderful sunny days we have had of late. I am so happy that winter is finally over. Now let's talk weddings! There are lots and lots of them in front of me over the next few months. I love being a celebrant. I love meeting new clients and I love being a part of their special day creating and presenting a beautiful professional ceremony. I have a favourite reading that I would like to share with you. I have many favourites actually but this one stands out “In My Life” by The Beatles There are places I’ll remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone & some remain All these places had their moments With lovers & friends I still can recall Some are dead & some are living In my life, I’ve loved them all But of all these friends & lovers There is no one that compares with you And these mem’ries lose their meaning When I think of love as something new Though I know I’ll never lose affection For people & things that went before I know I’ll often stop & think about them In my life I love you more Beautiful words from some very famous people! Fees, Charges---Not All in a days Work!

First blog for a few weeks I know. I have had computer problems and the problem of being so cold, trying to keep warm. This past month I have been catching up on client meetings and of course meeting new clients which I always enjoy.

I want to chat to you today about Fees! I get very annoyed at email enquiries or phone enquiries or facebook enquiries asking me for my cheapest price as the couple only want a quick ceremony. Regardless of how long they want it, it still takes time to prepare it! It takes time to meet with the couple, usually there will be 3 meetings then perhaps a rehearsal! There is up to 6 hours for meetings and rehearsal to start off with! It takes time to write and edit the ceremony, let's say another 2 hours. It takes time for travelling to & from the meetings, the rehearsal and then the ceremony. Then apart from the time all this takes I have to also consider the money it takes for my printing costs, my computer costs, my car costs, my petrol costs, my stationery costs, my P.A costs,my website costs, my professional appearance and grooming costs to name a few of them!

The ceremony is the most important part of the wedding and a lasting memory of the wedding is a beautifully crafted professional ceremony officiated by a professionally trained well groomed and attired celebrant that has spent years of her life perfecting her craft so that it can be a warm and special and very memorable day for the couple.

So when anyone asks me for a cheap wedding I will say NO! There will be others out there that will do it as for instance last week a bride said she had a quote for $195 and then the week before a bride told me she had a quote for $250! I suspect these quotes were from celebrants that are desperate, that are probably doing a couple of ceremonies here & there for extra pocket money! Well that is not me. Why would you undercut the registry Office and they charge $420!

I can't understand why clients can spend up to $600 on a cake that just gets eaten & forgotten about (plus puts weight on LOL) or $450 on chair hire, carpet hire & flower pots that usually fall down in the wind then wont spend the same on a celebrant which I said before is the most important part of the ceremony!

These cheap fees are ruining the code for the celebrants that are passionate about their work. It is a business and it is about money but I go the extra mile to make sure my ceremonies are happy, memorable and professional.

Not all in a day’s work"Why do Officiates charge so much for a half hour of work?"
(Please keep in mind that Ministers, Priests, etc. collect a salary plus receive an honorarium. ...an Officiate does not. Our fee is our income.)
It takes an average of 10 hours of work per ceremony:
- Consultations
- scheduling
- Emails, phone calls
- Sometimes research for a particular ceremony
(Definitely the benefit of tons of research over the years + education / training)
- Ceremony prep, proof-reads, approvals, updates, modifications, last minute changes, re-approvals
- Ceremony practice time
- travel time + mileage to & from rehearsal
- Waiting before rehearsal
-coordinating rehearsal
- travel time + mileage to & from wedding
- Waiting before ceremony
- performing ceremony
- Sometimes mingling after ceremony
- Paperwork, paperwork... paperwork. ..Overhead costs (including advertising)
- (not to mention the time lost with their own significant others on the weekends, some Friday night & Saturday and Sunday, when significant others are at home)
Average 10 - 15hrs per ceremony
Here's the most important part:
Your Officiate is a licensed professional without which there would be no marriage.
It is the least expensive cost in the typical wedding, yet the only part that is really required.
You can have a wedding without flowers or centrepieces.
You can't have a legal marriage without an Officiate.
Be careful where you cut your corners! :)

Naming Rituals

Hi guys

I am sorry for not blogging lately. It's been too cold! I find that I am spending more time in front of the heater, not the computer.A couple more months and it will be all sunshine and roses. I cannot wait!

I have been telling you about Naming rituals. Today I would like to chat about another one which is most popular,

The Four Symbols......

1/ This Heart represents the Love that surrounds you now and always
2/ This Balloon represents Honesty and Trust, important ingredients in your future life.
3/ This Candle represents Happiness, may you always give and receive happiness
4/ These Flowers represent Growth and Beauty, may you enjoy beauty of mind and soul as you grow with each coming year.

Would the Godparents now sprinkle the petals onto ………. to symbolise life, beauty and growth.

Would (parents)……….. and………. now light the candle to remind you of your love and the internal flame in your hearts which will always burn for your little son/daughter.

After each symbol has been explained put each one into an organza bag. This bag is to be kept safe and later on when the child is older the ritual can be explained to him/her. Silk flowers can replace fresh ones if you prefer not to dry them out.
After the candle is lit it will remain so for the duration of the ceremony and then placed into the bag with the other items.

As I explained in an earlier blog there are so many nice rituals to include in the naming ceremony. When I have my first meeting with my clients to discuss their child's Naming Ceremony I show them the Naming Ceremony Book. In this book there are lots of ideas, rituals, poems and readings, everything to make a beautiful Naming Ceremony. This book is on loan to the clients and then at our next meeting we work on the couples ceremony choices and ideas that they have for the ceremony. From here I can personalise the ceremony and make it theirs. I then have a final meeting and show the clients the finished ceremony, God Parent certificates and the Naming Certificate that I have made, printed, laminated and have scanned photos of baby on as well.
Next is the BIG day, the naming celebration and next week there will be more on this.

My last posting I chatted to you about having a Time Capsule at your baby's naming celebration.Today I would like to tell you about another ritual that can be included in the ceremony......

BAG FULL of WISHES FOR THE CHILD

This bag is filled with wonderful hopes, dreams & happiness. This bag is filled with laughter & love. This bag is filled with all the things that make Wishes come true.

The Coin……………… represents Wealth
The Feather……… represents Good Luck
The Flower………… represents Growth, Health & Beauty
The Balloon……… represents Honesty
The Dolphin……… represents Love of the Water
The Heart…………… represents Unconditional Love
The Candle………… represents Happiness
The Adventurine………… represents Compassion, Prosperity,Healing, Harmony, Creativity &
intelligence
The Rose Quartz……… represents Self Love, Self Trust

Some of the items needed can be bought from the Tree of Life store and the little organza bag needed to keep the items in can be purchased from Spot Light or the $2 shop.

Each item is represented by the meanings set out above and it is a nice touch to ask different people to step forward to place a particular item in the organza bag, maybe the godparents ,grandparents or great grandparents. Then the bag is kept safe for the child until they grow older and can understand what each item represents.

This is a lovely and very special part of the ceremony.

Next time I will tell you about another ritual that can also be included in a naming ceremony.

Baby Namings

Hi guys,

When a new baby is born, it is a time of Celebration.

A time when you as parents can formally name him/her before your family & friends.

A time when you can formally appoint guardians/godparents/mentors for your child.

A time when you can announce before your family & friends your love & commitment to your precious child.

Whether you are religious or not, a naming ceremony can have special readings or a candle lighting ceremony included.
I will supply a small table on the day for the signing of certificates and a PA System for the ceremony.
The naming Certificate and God Parenting certificates are included in the fee discussed. Any extra certificates are available at a minimal cost to you.
A candle inscribed with the child's name and date of naming is my special gift to you and can be used for the candle ceremony.
A decorative copy of the ceremony is presented to you for a keepsake.
My fee includes all paperwork and preparation of the ceremony, travelling, and our meetings, I come to you!
I will make your Ceremony unique, memorable & very special.
There are so many nice rituals that can be included in the baby's Naming ceremony.
Over the next weeks I will be posting some of those but today I will start off with a most popular one..............

A Time Capsule! Can you imagine the look of wonder, fear, excitement,dread and maybe embarrassment on your child's eighteenth birthday when you produce a time capsule that you started at his/hers naming ceremony many years beforehand. I wish I had of had one for my three boys. I suppose though presenting them on their 18th's with all their baby teeth was enough embarrassment. Oh and the baby locks of hair didn't go down too well either.

For your time capsule I suggest when you post the invitations that you ask that each guest bring along something to be placed in the child's Time Capsule.
• Foot and hand prints from the child and the parents!
• Naming ceremony photo
• Commitment letter to the child from the parents and godparents, mentors or guardians
• Baby photographs
• Picture of the house they were living in at the time they were born
• A sketch of the neighbourhood where they were born
• Lock of hair
• Blessing prayer
• List of all the names that they could have been
• The meaning of the names given
• Newspaper clipping about what was happening on the day A bag of balloons or party streamers
• Item of baby clothing
• Dates of when their first tooth appeared, first steps etc
• Cards from their naming ceremony
• A letter from grandparents or family members reliving stories from when they were 18
• A letter from grandparents or elders discussing values or anecdotes they wish to share that could inspire the young person
• Special poem
• A great work of fiction or a fun novel
• Inspiring quotes
• Special minted coin from the child’s year of birth
. An old movie, concert.opera or football ticket
. An old mobile phone with a message on it (don't forget the put the charger in as well!)
. The local paper or a current edition of the Womens Weekly or new Idea.
. Maybe a team photo of your favourite football side (that would be Manly LOL)

I suggest at the naming ceremony to have a basket for all the guests to place their time capsule items in. That way everyone can see some of the things that are in there. Later on make sure a tightly sealed container is used and that if there are any paper products in there to wrap them securely in tissue paper. This way they will keep from deteriorating.

Most of all just have fun with getting the capsule ready and look forward to the next eighteen to twenty years when your young adult will be finally opening it and seeing some the things that were back in the "old days"

Hi guys,

By now you will have your winter woollies out. The nights are starting to get a little colder now that we are approaching our winter months. The days however have been beautiful and warm and sunny. I think the Autumn and Winter months are great for weddings.

There are some lovely rituals that can be included in your ceremony and today I would like to talk about one that is most popular. To Hand Fast or to "Tie the Knot"

*HAND FASTING is an ancient Celtic wedding ritual in which the couples' hands are tied together with a ceremonial ribbon or cloth to symbolise the coming together & remaining tied together. As this knot is now tied, so are your lives now bound. Woven into this cord, into its very fibres are all the hopes of your family & friends & of yourselves for your new life together. Remember that it is not the physical cord, but what it represents that keeps you together. The couple saves the ribbon or cloth as a keepsake. Here are some words that can be said with hand fasting:

(Groom) and (Bride), know now before you go further, that since your lives have crossed in this life, you have formed eternal and sacred bonds.

As you seek to enter this state of matrimony you should strive
to make real the ideals that to you, give meaning this ceremony
and to the institution of marriage.

With full awareness, you are not only declaring your intent to be hand fasted before your friends and family, but you speak that intent also to your creative higher powers.

The promises made today and the ties that are bound here greatly strengthen your union and will cross the years and lives of each soul's growth.

Do you still seek to enter this ceremony?.....”Yes we do”

(Groom) and (Bride), as your hands are bound together now, so your lives and spirits are joined in a union of love and trust.

Above you are the stars and below you is the earth.

Like the stars your love should be a constant source of light,
and like the earth, a firm foundation from which to grow.

This ritual can be adapted to suit. I have done a Hand Fasting which incorporated up to seven ribbons of different colours, the meanings of each colour then being read out as each binding is made.Each ribbon was placed on the couples hands by the groomsmen & bridesmaid. The parents also can be involved by being asked to place the ribbons over the couples hands and then tie the lovers knot.

It is a lovely part of the ceremony. After the ritual is done the ribbons are placed in a drawstring bag and kept by the bride & groom. Their union will forever be as one just as the ribbons are tied together in one knot.

First comes Marriage and then the baby carriage

hey guys,

I have been so lucky since I have been a celebrant. Not only do I get to officiate beautiful weddings but further down the track I am asked to officiate the couple's baby's Naming day. This is when I feel very special and very much apart of their family and I can create a ceremony for them that is very personal warm and caring.

A naming ceremony is a wonderful celebration whereby the parents can formally appoint Godparents, Guardians or Mentors before their family & friends.Together the Godparents light the child's naming candle & every year on the child's birthday are invited to return to re-light the candle & also to do the same on those very special occasions that occur during the child's life. It is a lovely ritual that is performed at the ceremony and is one of many that can be done on the day.

I can't wait until I become a Grandmother. I don't care if my three boys don't get married first, but I would give them a discount (LOL) Hey I suppose I have to wait for them to get girlfriends first. Oh well I can only hope. In the mean time I really do enjoy officiating my beautiful naming ceremonies.

The passing of Mr Ray McDougall.

Hi guys

I would like to dedicate this posting to my mentor & friend Mr Ray McDougall who passed away on Easter Saturday, aged 71. I felt it a great honour also when his family asked me to officiate Ray's funeral the following Friday.

My journey with Ray began when he became a regular customer at my coffee shop at Bay Village in 1995. He must of loved my coffee making skills as when I started a new business in 2004 at Cresthaven Ray once again supported me & was one of my loyal customers. I will always remember him as being well dressed & always friendly & polite and as he spoke to me I felt like he was always sincere & caring. He would sit & sip on his coffee & sometimes would order breakfast then he would either read the paper of one of his books.

He told me that he thought I would be a good celebrant and he even went as far as bringing to me a clipping from the local paper of a course at Ourimbah Uni that was starting in relation to Marriage Celebrancy. I did the course & past with flying colours and became appointed in September 2005.

The following months I would observe Ray's ceremonies & visit him at his home. The wealth of information that he has passed onto me has been invaluable & I believe made me the celebrant that I am today, confident, professional,caring,dedicated & always in control.

Ray's funeral was very emotional but I am sure that he would have been proud of me. I know that he was standing beside me keeping me in control. In all my ceremonies Ray's spirit will be there & I will never forget him. He was such a gentle man & a true gentleman.

I proudly call him my Friend and my Mentor and he will be forever unforgettable.

200th Wedding!

Hi guys,

Every wedding is special to me but on Monday my first of two weddings that day will be my 200Th wedding that I have officiated. I was appointed by the Attorney Generals Department to solemnise marriages on the 8Th September 2006. I officiated my first wedding in January 2007 and as I remember was a little nervous but loved every minute of it and afterward I received some lovely feedback from the newly wed couple and their guests. There was no looking back from there as my confidence grew with each wedding I officiated. The professionalism together with my warm & caring nature that I give to my clients is testimony that this chosen career of mine has been a good one. I love my job!

As I said before I have two weddings on Monday and both very different. The first is a morning wedding on the Central Coast. The bride & groom are teachers and want to have a small but intimate family gathering at a local park then celebrate over lunch at a local cafe. Great start to the school holidays for them!

My second wedding is on the North Shore in the afternoon. Once again a small intimate affair with only nine in attendance. The ceremony will be held in a Senior Citizens Community Hall where the Bride & Groom regularly attend. You see the Bride is 95 & the Groom is 90. The groom has invited me to the "wedding breakfast" afterward to be held at the local RSL Club. How sweet is that? Theirs will be my 201st wedding.

I look forward to when I can post on my blog my 300Th wedding! Keep watching my blog as I will definitely post some pics of these two very special weddings.

Wedding Expos Australia

Hi guys,

Tomorrow I am attending Wedding Expos Australia Bridal Fair at Parramatta RSL Club.
There will be over 70 wedding exhibitors attending. I have been involved with these expos for a few years now & find them invaluable to be a part of. Not only do I get the chance to meet some wonderful new clients but getting to know the other exhibitors is invaluable, great to network with them.

The Expo is open at 10am and closes at 3pm. Please come along and say hi. I would love to chat to you about your up coming wedding. I will have a slide show of my past weddings as well as my photo books and wedding manuals on display.Sand ceremonies are very popular so I will have some bottles on display and will be able to tell you how the ritual works. So, let me get this straight...Kelsey Grammer can end a 15 year marriage over the phone; Larry King can be on divorce #9; Britney Spears had a 55-hour marriage; Jesse James and Tiger Woods, while married, were having sex with EVERYONE... Yet, the idea of same-sex marriage is going to destroy the institution of marriage? Really? Re-post to your page if you are proud to support equal rights FOR ALL!

I would be proud & honoured to officiate any wedding regardless of what sex my clients are. If two people love each other then what is the problem.

The following is a letter penned by a loving mother to her daughter on her wedding day (non legal of course!) I was privileged to read the letter at her daughter & partners Commitment Ceremony last December.

St.Valentines Day

Hi guys,

I hope everyone had a wonderful day today, I received a lovely sweet kiss off my husband when he came home from work this arvo & also the earrings that I picked out for him to buy me last week. We have been married a very long time and days like today come and go but as long as I have him I really don't care for presents or flowers.

Back in the day, way back in the day, way back in 270AD whenever that was Valentine was a bishop who held secret marriage ceremonies of soldiers. He did this without Claudius II who was the emperor at the time. He felt that married men were more emotionally attached to their families and would not make good soldiers.
He thought that marriage would make the men weak!

Along comes Valentine who was the "friend of lover's" and would marry them in secrecy. When Claudius found out he was not happy. He had Valentine arrested and sentenced to death.Valentine had befriended the daughter of his jailer, Aslerius.

Before the execution Valentine asked for a pen and paper and signed a farewell note to the jailer's daughter. it said "from your Valentine"
he was believed to have been executed on February 14Th, 270AD

From then on February 14Th became a day for all lovers and Valentine became a Patron saint. With the coming of Christianity the day became known as St. Valentine's Day.

So for all of you lovers out there I do hope you had a lovely day enjoying each others company, maybe a nice dinner a couple of wines, flowers and chocolates. Hopefully some of you will get engaged today and will want to get married next Valentine's Day.Don't forget to call me if you do!!!!!!

My Valentine's Day wedding this evening was beautiful and it will always have that extra special meaning to the couple, one of being married on such a romantic day.

Hi guys

I had a wonderful week in Tamworth during the Country Music Festival celebrations. I danced, sang (not so well) drank, ate & saw some wonderful bands & shows.I joined in and danced in the Biggest Line dance, I think there were about 600 people which wasn't a record.It was great fun though. I also met some wonderful people and maybe will be able to catch up with them again next year. Yes I have booked again for next year.Oh, my husband Kevin had a good time too.

So I have saved that date for Tamworth next year. No wedding bookings taken from the 23rd Jan to the 30th Jan. "Save the date" notices are a great idea for weddings as well. It lets people know when your up coming wedding will be & allow them to put aside that date for your special occasion.

I have seen these "save the dates" on magnets, on cards and even on coasters. They don't cost a lot to produce. Just search the net for printing & stationery places that make them. It's a great idea especially when your wedding requires overnight accommodation as well as the guests can organise their bookings in advance.

Hi guys,

Summer is here! Don't forget to use sunscreen when you are outdoors at a wedding or just out for a walk. My husband Kevin & myself went to Tamworth last week for the Country festival and had the best time. It is full on with lots of great bands, buskers, bush poets, singers, musicians of all types. The atmosphere is wonderful & everyone we met were so friendly.I will be back next year! Anyone wanting to get married in Tamworth let me know.

Speaking of getting married. How does 11-11-11 or the 01-11-11 sound? I have two weddings booked on the 11th but haven't a booking yet for the 1st. Ok so it's Melbourne Cup Day. Two good reasons not to forget your wedding anniversary and all the ladies can wear hats to your wedding which is unusual these days. You can have the ceremony then everyone can watch the race. How exciting will that be and what a great celebration each year in the years to come.

The other memorable dates this year were the 01-01-11 & the 11-01-11 I officiated weddings on both these days. Both were at 11am as well!

Another bit of trivia that I just read about was that if you add the age you are becoming this year with the last two digits of the year you were born it will always come back to "111" try it. It works.

I am 59 this year & was born in 52 = 111
My eldest son is 33 this year and was born in 78 = 111
My middle son is 26 this year and was born in 85 = 111
My youngest son is 22 this year and was born in 89 =111
My husband turned 61 yesterday & was born in 50 = 111

Why is this so? you may ask. I don't know! maybe someone can tell us.

Never too old to get married!

Hi guys,

The New Year has kicked in & everyone is looking ahead to what it will bring for them. At this point I would like to say to everyone in the Queensland towns and further down south into NSW that the floods have affected my family and I send our thoughts & prayers to you.

On a lighter note I would like to share with everyone today the wedding I officiated last Tuesday being the 11th January at Toukley Senior Citizens Club. The bride looked gorgeous in a two piece ivory suit. She wore gold slipper type shoes. her name is Dorothy & she is 94. The groom is a handsome man who wore a pink coloured casual shirt and dress shorts. His name is Cyril and he is 86 and a double amputee.

This couple are the best of friends and soul mates. They met eight years ago and each Tuesday afternoon they attend Toukley Senior Citizens afternoon dance & sing-a-long so no better place to have their ceremony.

It was a lovely ceremony with emotions flowing high as Cyril & Dorothy both shedding some tears whilst saying their vows to each other.

I have known this sprightly couple for only a couple of months now but I will never forget them. They made me realise that at no matter what age love, friendship, togetherness and mate ship can prevail even though there may be what may seem some insurmountable obstacles in the way. This couple have shown me that love will find a way.

Dorothy told me that Cyril is the only one that ever made her really laugh! I can truly understand why as Cyril has a really good sense of humour.
His pet name for Dorothy is "passion pants" Say no more!

New Years Day Wedding

Hi guys,

Happy New year. I wish all my clients, friends and family much happiness this coming year. I started the year off with a beautiful wedding which was at Wyrrabalong Reserve at Bateau Bay. For those who don't know where this is, it is above Bateau Bay Beach & is part of the National Parks Trust. Bateau Bay is on the Central Coast north of Gosford. In close proximity there is also Terrigal Beach, Toowoon Bay & the Entrance Beach.All lovely locations for weddings.

My bride is from America and now will be making her home in Aus with her new husband. It was a lovely ceremony with a few tears especially when they read their vows to each other.

I started the ceremony off with a reading "The Journey" as it seemed very significant to the Bride & Groom and their journey together since they first met.

"The Journey"

Two friends decided to journey together towards a common destination. Before they began their journey they share their expectations as follows: There will be days, my friend, when one will want to walk along the mountain path, whilst the other may prefer the valley, but we will come together at the end of the day and share our experiences.
There will be days when one will want to sing and dance, whilst the other will prefer to travel in quietness, so we will choose different paths, but we will meet at the close of the day and be content with our experiences.
There will be days when one may want to rest, whilst the other may want to move further along the path, but at the right time we will come together and be happy that each has fulfilled their own needs.
There will be days when we shall travel together as one.
If we can respect the other's need whilst still fulfilling our own, then our journey will be an experience to rejoice in.

Also which was very significant was the time & date they got married. It was at 11 minutes past 11 in the morning of the 1st of the 1st 2011...all the ones
11.11am 01.01.011 No excuse to forget their wedding anniversary.

My wedding on the 11th January has lots of ones in it as well. More on that later and more on the lovely couple who have racked up some numbers between them, a total of 180 years. Stayed tuned until next time

Christmas Eve

Hi Guys,

It was this time 21 years ago that I arrived at Gosford Hospital for the birth of my third son, Mark. I just got there & then fifteen minutes later he popped out. What a lovely Xmas present for Kevin & myself & his older brothers, Evan and Timothy.
Christmas is a special time to share with family & friends & Mark having his birthday on Xmas Eve makes it all the more special for us although he does usually have his celebratory party a week beforehand.He knows how to party!

I would now like to wish all my clients, past and present, my friends, family & colleagues a wonderful beautiful Christmas & a happy & very prosperous New Year.

Christmas Cheer

Hi guys,

My last wedding for the year was today at Charlestown. It was a beautiful ceremony and involved the blended family's 6 children each having a part to play from flower girl to ring bearer to being involved in the hand fasting to being a witness to taking part in the sand ceremony.

Their mothers took part in the ring warming ritual which was very special as they cupped the wedding rings in their hands and bestowed upon them their blessings for the bride and groom.

The candle of life was lit.
The candle of the soul was lit.
Then finally the unity candle was lit to form the eternal light of love.

I am sure that the Lord of Air, Fire, water & Earth will guard this precious family's circle with their love and light.

I quote from the ceremony....

From spirit we come, and to spirit we go, from their union, the power of love will flow.
The winds of reason will stir the air, and temper their quarrels with respectful care.
Their bond is forged upon the fire and love will fill their hearts with steady desire

Commitment Ceremonies

Hi guys,

December already & Santa is getting ready to make his trip down from the North Pole.The weather has been rainy,sunny,rainy sunny. Far out when are we going to get two sunny days in a row. Luckily it hasn't affected my ceremonies apart from the Commitment Ceremony I officiated for a couple of lovely young ladies at Caves Beach last Wednesday afternoon. Non stop rain but no wind so that made it not as bad. I was lucky to have a few extra umbrellas in my car for some of the guests without them.

Being a Commitment ceremony & it not being a legal ceremony by the laws of this country means that at some stage through the ceremony I have to inform the people that "this is not a legal ceremony." I also say that this ceremony will be just as special & warm as any ceremony that I officiate. I can't wait until Same Sex Marriages are legalised.

My gay couples are beautiful people just like my heterosexual couples. I believe it's all about love & commitment in any relationship. At that ceremony at Caves Beach in the rain I read something that one of the girls mother had written for her.

A sunburnt Country,A sunburnt celebrant!

I really felt the brunt of our beautiful sunny weather last weekend. Friday afternoon was a scorcher! My groom said to hurry the ceremony up as it was so hot! At the end of the ceremony there was a butterfly release.They didn't hang around, flew straight off to find some shade.

Saturday at the Rose Gardens in the Botanical Gardens was just as hot. Even the roses looked a little hot and bothered but their fragrance was beautiful. I didn't realise how burnt I was until later in the afternoon but I suffered in silence, until now.

Monday I invested in some 30+ sunscreen. I will be well prepared for whatever our beautiful weather serves up to me in the future. At this point I would like to say to all my B & G's that it is a good idea to "slip,slop & slap" the ol' sunscreen on before the ceremony begins.There are so many brands & types of sunscreen protection out there. There are roll-ons, spray type ones or creams. There are ones that are scented or non-scented. There are ones with tinted moisturisers or gel type applications. Far out it was so hard to decide which one to purchase.

Once I did I am sure that I will be happy with the protection I will get in the future. I have two weddings this weekend. I just hope I get the chance to use my new sunscreen. It's raining at the moment. Fingers crossed!

Rituals-Wine Ceremony

I think summer is almost here but the storms of late haven't been well received especially to my dog, Taz. He is scared of the thunder & barks like crazy. I still have lots of beautiful weddings to officiate before Xmas so I do hope there will be lots of sunny days ahead as well.

The wedding I officiated last Saturday at Belgenny Farm at Camden was beautiful. The couple were both of English heritage so there were lots of guests from England. Having their ceremony at Belgenny Farm was great as the farm is virtually as it was back in the day when McArthur lived there. Lots of history & lots of beautiful memories.

One such memory for this couple will be the Wine Ceremony that I incorporated into their wedding ceremony. Both the Groom & Bride drink from the same cup. The first goblet holds the sweet wine & the second goblet holds the bitter wine.

To drink of the sweet wine means that the cup of life will contain within it the sweet wine of happiness, joy, hope & delight.
To drink of the sour wine means that the cup of life will sometimes hold hardships, disappointments, sorrow, grief & despair.

As the couple have shared the wine from those goblets may they share their lives. May they find life's joys heightened, its bitterness sweetened, and all of life enriched by a constant love.

May their cup of life be sweet, full to overflowing.

There is no reason why the wine could not be substituted with cordial, ginger beer or coke.It is the symbolic meaning that is important.

To finish off the ceremony last Saturday the Bride & Groom released butterflies. That is another beautiful ritual..............stayed tuned til next week!

Bridal Waltz

Hi guys,

So much has been happening lately. So many weddings & such bad weather to cope with but on the whole it doesn't dampen the couples day. Maybe that perfect picture taken on that sun drenched beach cannot happen but the memories that the couple have of their special day are there forever.

I would like today to share with you my beautiful wedding at Rhododendron Park at Mt. Pleasant last Saturday morning. Luckily it was a beautiful sunny morning, more than I can say for my second wedding back on the coast in the afternoon.

The ceremony was attended by about 40 friends & family.We stood in front of the pond that was covered in water lilys and with ducks swimming aimlessly around. A lovely setting.A trio of stringed instruments played the wedding procession. The bride walked towards the Groom & myself looking radiant, he having a smile from ear to ear. You could tell he was so happy & proud to be marrying his beloved. During the ceremony they said their personal vows to each & the guests were all involved in a ring warming ritual.

After the ceremony & the formal introduction of the now Mr & Mrs I witnessed something very new to me, the Bridal Waltz following the presentation of the couple. I introduced the couple to their guests & asked them to please have their first dance together as Mr & Mrs.....

What a touching moment when they took to the "grass" and danced in front of the pond to the sounds of Beyonce's "Halo". After a while I then asked the guests to please join them AND they did! Just to stand back and watch all these people dancing to a beautiful song in a park at 11.30am in the morning was something I will never forget.

"In my Life"

Hi everyone & welcome to October. I don't know where September went. I have neglected my blogging of late only due to the fact I have been busy with all my September weddings & meeting new clients & writing ceremonies. It is that time of year.

Also it's that time of year where we still haven't seen much of Spring & yesterday wasn't any exception . Yesterdays beach wedding "plan B" was put in place due to the rain. It was still a beautiful ceremony. I started the ceremony by reading the "beach wedding poem" but firstly I asked everyone present to close their eyes & just imagine themselves on the beach with the sand beneath their feet & to hear the waves roll in as I was reading the poem. I think I got everyone in the mood but it still kept raining!

Another nice reading that I sometimes begin my ceremonies with, actually it is a song beautifully written by the Beatles called "In My Life". The words in this song are beautiful. I haven't yet had anyone ask me to sing it, maybe they know that I can't sing although I love to sing I quite agree.

Daylight saving started today & the NRL Grand Final is about to start as well. I am not so keen to watch it as my team Manly is not playing.I have been busy working on my October weddings and baby namings.

Spring has Sprung!

Here we are three days into Spring & I haven't felt it. Have you? It's raining today & not a good sign for my wedding on the water this afternoon.

Outdoor weddings are beautiful but we cannot dictate what the weather will be like so it is vital that there is a "Plan B" in place.

Check with the reception venue as to whether you may have your ceremony there in case of inclement weather. The weather can change during the course of the day so leave it for as long as you can before changing but remember to let all your guests know as well!

the ABS Sydney Convention Exhibition Centre Bridal Fair

Hi everyone

the Australian Bridal Service Bridal Exhibition, Spring Spectacular at the Sydney Convention Exhibition Centre is on next weekend, being Saturday the 29th & Sunday the 30th August & I will once again be part of it!

I enjoy being apart of the ABS bridal fairs as not only do I get to meet some lovely new clients I get to network with other wedding providers. This is the biggest Bridal Fair that I know of & the quality & the expertise of the exhibitors are of a very high standard.Each exhibitor has been accredited by the ABS.

There are up to 200 exhibitors & a Gala Fashion Parade is on four times during the course of the day. This is a NOT to be missed part of your visit to the fair.

So put next weekend in your diary. Guests are welcome to stay for as long as they want to. Arrival times start at 10am

The Final Countdown

Hi everyone

If we are counting down days to when we have to vote, there are five more days (don't forget) but for my September brides your countdown is 15 days.

By now you should ................

Confirm everything.
Arrange for final dress fittings.
Start wearing your wedding shoes around the house to get used to them.
Have hair trials & make-up trials.
Hold pre-wedding parties & showers.
Make all final payments
Check the seating plan for the reception
Ensure the people that are giving speeches at the reception know their given role & how much time you have allotted for their speech.

The next couple of weeks will just fly by so it's important not to leave everything to the last minute.

Horses Birthday

Good afternoon everyone

And what a glorious sunny day (it is on the Central Coast)Tomorrow is the 1st August & counting down until September for all my September Brides we will have 31 days to go. Tomorrow is also the horses birthday. This is a universal day for all horses to celebrate their birthday on this one day so if there are foals being born today then tomorrow they will be one year old. I wonder if that applies to dogs. Not the same thing but one year of our life is seven years in their life so if a puppy is born does that mean he is seven? Something to think about!

What else to think about is our countdown to September weddings.
By now..................

Invitations should have been sent & replies received.
Arrange for your dress fittings
Men's suits should be hired or being fitted
All pre-wedding parties & bridal showers should be planned now
Book in wedding night accommodation
Check with your florist to see if your choice of flowers will be in stock on time.
Discuss with your celebrant a rehearsal day & time, which should be closer to the wedding day as then all the Bridal party are more likely be able to attend. Check with the venue if this rehearsal is OK with them.
Choose your Master of Ceremonies & go through with him/her the order of service & formalities of the evening.

I think if the weather stays just the same as today for September then Brides all over will be happy as all the horses will be tomorrow.

Wedding Checklist for September brides

Good morning everyone

By now everyone should be coming out of hibernation. I know that I have not wanted to do anything this winter apart from sitting in front of the heater & watching master chef! But this morning I was up early & on the treadmill at the gym by 7.30am (that's early for me!)

For those Spring brides there is no time to be lazing around as you only have 42 days until September starts. scary stuff eh? So everyone up, get motivated, do a few push ups, walk around the block a few times or put the Zumba dvd on & then grab a pencil & paper & tick off the things that are on the six week count down checklist

By now....

All invitations should be sent & replies flowing in. Keep a checklist of who has replied.
Keep a list of gifts received & who they are from. Ensure you send thank you notes within 2 weeks of receiving gifts.
Arrange for fittings of your dress.
Men's suits should be hired or picked up.
The wedding rings would be made & back from the jewellers
All your bridal showers,girls nights out should be planned now.
Book in wedding night accommodation.
All honeymoon travel should be booked.
Make an appointment to see your florist to choose your flower designs
Choose your Master of ceremonies.
Check with your Celebrant regarding her availability for your wedding rehearsal & then check with the wedding venue for confirmation of a time to having a wedding rehearsal. Ideally the last week is best for a rehearsal so that all the bridal party can attend

I'm getting married, now what?

Congratulations on your up-coming wedding!

The first thing I would suggest is to pick a celebrant! I would love to have an obligation free meeting with yourself and your fiance. At this meeting we can get to know each other and I can show you some sample ceremonies and the wedding manual. We can discuss dates and options for your wedding and I will show you my photo albums as well. If you think that I will be right for you then I will leave you the wedding manual to look through.

There are some lovely rituals that you might consider including in your ceremony such as the sand,rose candle or rope ceremonies or maybe a ring warming or handfasting. I will make your ceremony special and if you would like to say your vows to each other or have a special poem or reading then I will weave these into the ceremony.

At our second meeting we will complete the Notice of Intended Marriage. This form has to be completed at least one month & one day before the wedding. I have to sight Original birth certificates as identification and/or divorce dissolution papers if warranted or overseas passports if born outside Australia.

Following this meeting, we can arrange a wedding rehearsal if required and make sure the ceremony is just right!

Tree Tops Resort, Avoca

Hi guys,

This week I would like to tell you that I will be attending Tree Tops Resort's "open day" on Saturday the 3rd July from 10am-3pm as their preferred celebrant. How exciting to be asked, I was thrilled! I think the day will be invaluable to all intending Bride & Groom's as they will be able to see how the ceremonial area & the function rooms will be set up.

They will be able to chat to the resorts wedding co-ordinator and also photographer, events decorator & of course the Celebrant (me) to name a few of the providers that will be on site on the day.

Hopefully it will be a sunny day & hopefully I get to meet lots of couples. Please come & say hi

What should I expect from my celebrant?

A Marriage Celebrant, as a qualified trained and professional person, is authorised to conduct your marriage ceremony in a manner that meets the legal requirements.

This includes a range of matters - such as ensuring that your ceremony contains certain mandatory words; the correct completion of your Notice of Intended Marriage (NIM) and all other marriage documents; and the lodging of your marriage documents with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages - is done in such a way that they comply with the Marriage Act 1961.

Apart from ensuring that your ceremony contains the things that makes it legal, your Marriage Celebrant will also assist you in personalising your ceremony and, to this end, will offer some choices as to what you may like to consider for inclusion in your ceremony.

Your Marriage Celebrant can also offer you a range of resources to assist you in this process. This is not to say that you cannot write your own vows and indeed, if you would prefer to write your own ceremony, there are a number of celebrants who would be pleased to help you in this endeavour, and most importantly, would still ensure that your ceremony complies with all the legal requirements.

The obligations placed on Marriage Celebrants are outlined in a Code of Practice for Marriage Celebrants which is to be displayed by them. Some Marriage Celebrants may even provide you with a copy of this document.

Every Celebrant is different and all offer a wide range of services, make sure that you know what is included in the price and what is extra so you don't get any nasty surprises.

How much notice do I have to give?

The completed Notice of Intended Marriage from must be signed and received by the celebrant or authorised person at least one Australian calendar month (and a day) before the day you wish to get married.

The completed NIM must be returned to me as soon as possible. The date I receive it is the date from which the Australian calendar month (and a day) waiting period rule is determined.

You can fax a copy to me at 02 4389 1359 and then send the original signed (preferably in blue pen) copy to me by “snail mail”.

The date the fax copy arrives will be the date that it is “Officially Lodged” and then the month (and a day) waiting time starts "ticking' if it is followed by the hard copy, as you will have given me proper notice on the proper form and have subsequently provided me with the original.

When is a Wedding Not a Wedding

Hi guys,

It was with great interest that I read & totally agreed with Andrew Barr's posting on the Gay Marriage Blog recently & titled "When is a Wedding Not a Wedding!"

This young man has been with his partner for ten years. They live in the ACT. Although their union is recognised as a Civil Partnership & also their relationship is legally recognised in the ACT, they must not have a wedding nor can they "mimmick one" What alot of rubbish!

This loving couple have been together longer than some of the couples I have married.They have built a home together & they have a wonderful family & a great network of friends that support & love them.

They did have what they called a "wedding" with family & friends present. It sounded perfect but it wasn't legal. I think it is about time that it was!

I love my chosen profession as a Civil Marriage Celebrant. I love marrying couples that are in love & want to spend the rest of their lives together. What's the difference apart from gender?

What is a NIM?

A NIM is a Notice of Intended Marriage form.

To be married in Australia you will need to fill out a Notice of Intended Marriage form (NIM) and sign it on the back in the presence of a Justice of the Peace, or a doctor, or a lawyer, or a police officer or myself.

If you are both living outside of Australia you will need to fill out the Notice of Intended Marriage form (NIM) and sign it on the back in the presence of one of the following: an Australian Diplomatic Officer, an Australian Consular Officer, a Notary Public, an employee of the Commonwealth authorised under para 3(c) of the Consular Fees Act 1995 or an employee of the Australian Trade Commission authorised under para 3(c) of the Consular Fees Act 1995.

It only needs to be signed by one of you to start the clock ticking. It is valid for 18 months from the day I receive it.

How do I change my surname when I get married?

The Marriage Certificate presented on your wedding day is merely proof that your marriage took place. The reverse side of the Marriage Certificate advises of this situation.

What you will need for change of name purposes is the registered version of your Marriage Certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM). BDM charge a small fee which normally is over and above the fee you pay to your Marriage Celebrant.

I am happy to facilitate your application to BDM if you wish, and act as a conduit between yourself and BDM by submitting your application (and payment for same) at the same time as they lodge the other marriage documents.

Additionally, you should also be aware that you will need the BDM registered version of your Marriage Certificate to change your name on your passport and on your driver’s licence. Professional Registration Boards (e.g. Medical, Nursing) and some employers also will only accept the BDM version for change of name purposes. Please check with your employer what is the case in your situation.

If none of these situations present (for example you are not changing your name), you are not obligated to obtain the BDM registered Marriage Certificate. This would then become a matter of choice.

What do I legally have to do to get married?

Basically you must be over 18. If one of you is under 18 but over 16 you should speak to a celebrant regarding the requirements. Other important things you need to know are:

A ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ must be completed by both parties and lodged with a Celebrant at least a month before your proposed wedding date. If less than this, you’d need to seek ‘Shortening of Time’ permission from the relevant Government body. I can assist with this, if required.

I will need to see your birth certificate (if born in Australia) before the wedding. If you were born overseas and don’t have a birth certificate a current overseas passport will suffice. I can advise on what to do in those cases where neither of these documents is obtainable.

Documentation proving the dissolution of any previous marriage must also be shown to the Celebrant.

Your witnesses must be over 18.

the Australian Bridal Service Fox Studios Bridal Fair

Good evening everyone

I really enjoy being apart of the ABS Bridal Fairs. Not only do I get to meet some lovely people & potential new wedding clients but to network with fellow industry providers is invaluable to me.

For the wedding day to run smoothly each component of the day is important, from hair to makeup, bridal dresses, shoes, accessories, flowers & men's attire to the limousines to the event organisers to the reception,photographers, the cake & the music. At the ABS Bridal Fairs all these providers plus heaps more are there to chat & help you.

Last weekend I was part of the Fox Studios Bridal Fair & once again it was a huge success but very tiring on my feet. I enjoyed relaxing with a glass of wine back at my hotel after each day.

On the weekend I caught up with a past wedding client of mine who is also a photographer for Society Photos. They do a wonderful job. Dean also told me that he is the principal photographer of "foto-momo" www.foto-momo.com I wish him the best of luck. I know that he doesn't need much as with his personality, personal touch & great attitude as well as taking great pics he will do very well.

I also wish Kathie King of www.soapbouquets.com.au the best of luck also. It was her first Bridal Fair & her stand was very busy. "It's hard to believe its soap, one petal, one hand wash" they look like floral bouquets but they are made of soap! What a wonderful concept & very good for the environment.

Can I get my family involved in my wedding?

Definitely, your family and friends may participate in your marriage ceremony in a number of ways.

I offer a number of different ceremonies, such as the sand ceremony where each member of the family can choose a coloured sand to add to the bottle, to show a joining of families.

However, family participation does not extend to the legal requirements which can only be fulfilled by your Marriage Celebrant.

How long does a wedding ceremony take?

As a guide, wedding ceremonies usually take between 20 and 30 mins, however this depends on the type of ceremony you choose, the vows, any readings you have as well as any participation from your family.

What costs are involved when using a Civil Celebrant?

There is no set amount for a Civil Celebrant to charge for a ceremony.

Most ceremonies cost between $450 and $770 depending on the time, travel, situation and requirements.

This can be discussed at first point of contact as it depends on how far I have to travel and the type of ceremony you require.

All administration costs associated with the ceremony
Lodgement of all relevant paperwork to Births, Deaths and Marriages
A range of ceremonies to select from - or we can design one suitable to your needs
All consultations to collate the ceremony that the bride and groom are happy with

A rehearsal.
A keepsake copy of your ceremony.

"Save the Date"

Hi guys,

I know I have been a bit quiet lately but so have the weddings. May & June & July are traditionally the quiet months in the wedding industry This is not to say that I have been doing nothing, I have been catching up with my spring clients & meeting new ones. I have been preparing for the Bridal Fair at the Diggers Sunday the 16th & then the weekend of the 29th & 30th I will be at Fox Studios at the ABS Bridal Fair. Please come along and say hi.

Baby namings are keeping me busy of late.I think girl babies are the "in" thing at the moment as I have 4 baby girl namings to officiate in the coming month.

Back to weddings. When the bride & groom have chosen their date for the wedding it is a good idea to send out "save the date" cards, especially if the wedding is set down for a public holiday weekend. These are just reminders which are sent to the guests months in advance advising what date the ceremony will be held on & for the guests to keep this date free.

These cards may be in the form of fridge magnets, personalised cards or photo cards. If accomodation has to be made for the celebration then include a list of possible hotels & motels in the area as well with the "save the date" card.

It's mums day on Sunday & I wish all the mums a lovely day. I am lucky to have a mum that is also my best friend.

Bride's Bouquet

Good morning everyone

What lovely cooler weather we are experiencing at the moment. Today I would like to chat about how all the guests can be involved in a wedding ceremony apart from a ring warming.This works beautifully when the guest list is small, say up to 50 people.

When the invitations are sent out make a request for the guests to bring a single flower along to the ceremony. Once all the guests have gathered for the ceremony each of the flowers are collected & a ribbon is tied around them. This then becomes the Bride's bouquet & is handed to her just before the ceremony starts.

This is such a lovely gesture & knowing that in this bouquet are flowers from all her friends & family makes it all the more special.

Thats all for now. I have started Line Dancing & today is my third class. Yippee Yiy Yay.

A Love Proclamation by Patch Adams

Good evening,

There are so many beautiful poems & readings to include in your ceremony but one of my favourites is taken from the movie "Patch Adams" starring Robyn Williams. If you haven't seen it then go hire it out on video. It is about a doctor & his rather unorthodox methods in his doctoring to his patients who are mainly children & the dismay of some of his peers & the powers to be at the hospital he works at regarding his methods of not only healing the sick but healing the heart. It is a lovely movie.

What a wonderful time to get married

Easter is all about Easter Eggs, The Royal Easter Show, Family holidays & picnics & going to Church to celebrate with family & friends what Easter means. There will be more traffic on the roads over the Easter period so please take this into consideration when you are travelling to a wedding.

It is customary for the bride to be 5-10 minutes late but it is considered rude if the guests are late. Please allow enough time to get to the ceremony so that you arrive at least 20 minutes before the ceremony begins.

I love my job

Hi there,

No new tips for brides & grooms this week.

This week I just want to let you know how much I love my chosen career as a Civil Marriage Celebrant. I love meeting new clients, I love becoming part of their wedding day & the months & days leading up to it. I love creating a ceremony that they will love & remember for the rest of their days together. I love meeting their families & friends & seeing how everyone is happy on this very special day. I love to laugh with them & also cry with them.

I am passionate about what I do & although I am not perfect I try to be as close to perfect as I possibly can. I always give 100% at anything I put my mind to.

Since being a appointed a celebrant in 2006 after doing a course in 2005 I have learnt so much, about people, about the law, about community & about myself.

I was very lucky to firstly start my celebrants course with a bunch of other newies that I now call my friends & colleagues. They are always there for me if the need arises. We keep in touch by having lunches together a few times during the year. We were lucky to have been trained by a wonderful teacher & well respected celebrant.

I joined the AMC association in 2005 & I have found that I am still learning from the many more experienced celebrants than I. The special networking & camaraderie that my association has is I think unequaled to any other. Don't quote me on that as I don't really know, I am just guessing. I do hope there is an equally good association out there.

This past weekend my eyes have been opened to something I wish I could have closed them for. But I can't. I just want to say in closing that I am glad that I was trained properly, that I have had some wonderful experiences & I look forward to many more. And also I am happy that I have a network of celebrants that I can call upon for help if I need it. I now realise that many celebrants haven't been trained properly or have colleagues like I have so I feel I am the lucky one. I think step one for these celebrants would be to join an association. Help is there!

Shelly Beach,Manly wedding

What a wonderful wedding it was on the beach at Manly yesterday & very sunny after the past days being very wet! I must remember to take sunscreen next time & also to remind my clients to not only have some cool drinks on hand for their guests but maybe sunscreen as well.

Beach weddings usually need permits & I strongly suggest that these permits be shown to anyone that is hesitant to move from the area in which the wedding is to take place.

Maybe if the proposed area could be reserved earlier in the day with witches hats or marking the area with tape. This could possibly stop any confrontations with the public. After all it is supposed to be a happy day.

Yesterday was a happy day. A beautiful ceremony which had French & Spanish readings & included a Sand Ceremony with different sands from beaches that the couple had been to & then collecting from all the guests some of the Shelly Beach sand for the decanter as well.The different layers looked wonderful.

The afternoon finished with a couple of champagnes, french of course!

Ring Warmings

Hi everyone. This week I would like to chat about how all the guests are involved in a ring warming. This ritual is a lovely part of the ceremony. Before the ceremony begins the best man holds the rings that have been placed in a small organza bag.
At the beginning of the ceremony after the introduction & giving away. I ask the best man to pass the rings firstly to the brides mother then to the grooms mother & then if the rings could be passed around for everyone to silently bestow their blessings & warmest wishes for the bride & grooms future happiness, prosperity & unity.
The ceremony continues whilst the rings are being passed around. When it is time for the ring giving the best man hands the rings back to me.
"These rings have now been warmed & blessed by your loving family & friends and will forever carry with them their love and wishes for your future happiness together'
As I said before it is a lovely part of the wedding ceremony and so far we haven't lost a ring, they've both come back!

Can I play music during my wedding ceremony?

Of course you can have music during the wedding ceremony.

We can arrange to have music played for your guests prior to your arrival, as you arrive and at special moments throughout the ceremony, as well as at the conclusion of the ceremony and at the signing of the certificate. It's up to you - as long as I know what you'd like we can incorporate it into the ceremony.

Each wedding is a unique and special event, if there's anything you'd like to add to make your day more special, please let me know.

Wedding Tips

Hi guys.
This is my third tip for a wedding without feinting Brides, Grooms or their guests. Hydration! That's it.
An outdoor ceremony as mine was today & in 35 degree heat takes it's toll on everyone. Give someone the job of organising an esky with ice & small bottles of water. For that extra touch have the bottles with personalised labels on them with Bride & Grooms name & date of wedding.
That won't be hard to swallow!

Marriage Ceremony locations

Good evening, this is the second tip for my Brides & Grooms from me.

Having your ceremony at the beach or in a park is the trend these days but please inform the local council of your intention.
Maybe there won't be a fee involved but it is courtesy to let them know just in case another couple have the same time & date & location picked as you do.

If there is a fee payable please keep your receipt with you on the day just in case a ranger wants verification of payment.

I always advise my clients if they are intending on having an outdoor ceremony to have a plan "B" in readiness in case of inclement weather. Maybe ask the reception centre if they would be willing to let you have your ceremony there if it rains. If all else fails & you cannot find somewhere "dry" then just bring lots of umbrellas!

I believe in hopes and dreams and everything magical.

I believe that your wedding day will be just that, truly magical and truly memorable.

I love being a Celebrant and I would be honoured if you chose me to officiate at your wedding. It would be my pleasure to help make your Day so special, so happy and so stress free!

Being professional in my approach and giving personal service, reflects my warm and caring nature. I like to get to know my couples, so I hope I can be part of your wedding and the months leading up to it.

Your Ceremony will be personalised just for you. We will work together to create your magical day.

Please allow me to outline the services that I offer and what I commit to with all my couples who engage my services.

● We meet and talk about your wedding ceremony - I come to you!

We discuss the type of ceremony you both desire and how you picture it happening. This is also a 'get to know' each other meeting. It is relaxed. I explain that some legal documents have to be filled out.

The 'Notice of Intended Marriage' has to be completed at least one month and one day before the wedding. If you like what you see in me, we go ahead and complete the NIM. I have to sight both your original Birth Certificates and, if previously married, the Decree Absolute.

I provide you with my Wedding Manual. This is for you to take and peruse at your leisure. In it, there are lots of ideas for the ceremony. There are examples of vows, readings and poems. How about having my unique Sand, Candle, Wine or Rose Ceremony included. If you want to have something of your own included in the ceremony, then that is ok. I will help you with the wording and will weave it into the ceremony.

This meeting usually lasts an hour and a half to two hours.

● We meet a second time before the big day. It's at this meeting that we finalise the order of ceremony, the chosen readings and vows and other elements you have decided to incorporate, if you wish I will compose as part of the ceremony a personal introduction, or your story. Your family and friends will enjoy hearing about the journey you both took from first meeting, the proposal, the engagement to being here today.

● We keep in contact by email or by phone and the month preceding the ceremony I will show you a draft of the completed ceremony for your approval.

● We conduct a rehearsal a week before the ceremony if you so desire, with all the participants present.

● I arrive at the ceremony 30-45 minutes before-hand to arrange the ceremonial setting and to re-assure the groom and his attendants. I will liaise with the photographer, videographer and the person who is responsible for the music to ensure the smooth running of the ceremony. I will greet the bride, her father and her attendants as they arrive for the ceremony. Once in place, I will return to take my place beside the groom, I then gesture for the bridal music to start and hence the ceremony begins.

I believe my ceremonies are memorable and I will make yours so special that your day will live in your hearts forever.

Included in the services I offer are as follows:-

My fee, as discussed at our initial meeting or phone call includes all our meetings, travel costs, parking and GST.

● I provide a table, with a beautiful handmade table cloth for the signing.

● I provide a PA system with a headset microphone for myself and a hand held microphone for the ceremony for the readings or poems.

● I will submit all the legal paperwork to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registrar.

● I will give you a decorative copy of your ceremony.

● I will give you a beautiful, handmade candle, inscribed with your names and date of wedding as a special gift from me.

● Please ask me about my unique Sand, Wine, Rose, Candle or Rope Ceremonies as I can incorporate these into your wedding ceremony.

Baby Namings

When a new baby is born, it is a time of Celebration.

A time when you as parents can formally name him/her before your family & friends.

A time when you can formally appoint guardians/godparents/mentors for your child.

A time when you can announce before your family & friends your love & commitment to him/her.

Whether you are religious or not, a naming ceremony can have special readings or a candle lighting ceremony included.

I will supply a small table on the day for the signing of certificates and a PA System for the ceremony.

The naming Certificate and God Parenting certificates are included in the fee discussed. Any extra certificates are available at a minimal cost to you.

A handmade candle inscribed with the child's name and date of naming is my special gift to you and can be used for the candle ceremony.

Same Sex Marriages

Although same sex marriages are currently illegal in Australia, many gay & lesbian couples still wish to make a public affirmation of their commitment to each other.

In the presence of family & friends the couple can pledge their love for one another.

This ceremony is similar to a wedding ceremony but is no way legally binding. The ceremony can be as formal or as informal as you want.

We will work together to create your ceremony, the way you want it to be, personal, warm, friendly, funny & loving.

A handfasting ceremony is a nice inclusion to the ceremony as it shows the binding nature the couple have for each other.

Renewal of Vows

A Renewal of Vows Ceremony is one which an already married couple re-affirms their love & commitment to each other before their family & friends.

This may be celebrated on the occasion of a special anniversary, a birthday or any time of year. Maybe the couple were married overseas or interstate when family & friends could not attend or maybe the couple are being re-united after a separation.

This ceremony is about the past years together as husband & wife & about their future, their hopes & aspirations. It’s about the love they have for each other & the journey that they have travelled so far & about the journey they have yet to make together.

A renewal of vows ceremony is like a wedding ceremony without the legal obligations. Readings & poems may be included as well as the consent & the exchanging of rings. Personal vows may be added or the original vows said from your wedding ceremony.

It is a nice touch to have a “warming of the rings” as the ceremony is taking place. The rings are placed in a small bag & passed around & as each of your guests touch them, they make a wish for the both of you.

The Handfasting Ceremony

*HANDFASTING is an ancient Celtic wedding ritual in which the couples' hands are tied together with a ceremonial ribbon or cloth to symbolise the coming together & remaining tied together.

As this knot is now tied, so are your lives now bound. Woven into this cord, into its very fibres are all the hopes of your family & friends & of yourselves for your new life together. Remember that it is not the physical cord, but what it represents that keeps you together. The couple saves the ribbon or cloth as a keepsake. Here are some words that can be said with handfasting:

(Groom) and (Bride), know now before you go further, that since your lives have crossed in this life, you have formed eternal and sacred bonds.

As you seek to enter this state of matrimony you should strive

The Rose Ceremony

The Rose Ceremony is simple yet profoundly moving. The bride and groom exchange a red rose, symbolizing the giving and receiving of their love for each other throughout their entire married life.

A sample of the vows at a Rose Ceremony:

The Celebrant gives the Bride and Groom a rose. The rose is a symbol of love and a single rose always means I love you.

Celebrant to Couple: (she hands Bride and Groom a rose). Your gift to each other for your wedding today has been your wedding rings- which shall always be an outward demonstration of your vows of love and respect, and your commitment to each other.

You now have what remains the most honourable title which may exist between a man and a woman - the title of Mr and Mrs.

For your first gift as husband and wife, that gift will be a single rose.

The rose is a symbol of love and a single rose always means, I love you. So it is appropriate that for your first gift as husband and wife, that gift will be a single rose. Please exchange your first gift as husband and wife.

The Wine Ceremony

The wine sharing ceremony is a delightful ceremony embracing traditions that began well before the medieval period. Then, a bride and groom would celebrate their pledge to each other by drinking wine from a single cup ? one blood, one family and one kin.
The Wine Ceremony symbolises that the couple, from this day forward drink from the same cup. What happens to one happens to the other, for better or worse.

I can show you how to include an alternative ritual using coloured water. This is most suitable for younger children.

I can help you add the finishing touches with some brilliant, original ideas - just ask!

A sample of the vows at a Wine Ceremony:

Bride and Groom, This cup is a sign of your unity. Although you are two distinct persons, both respecting the equal dignity of the other, you have chosen to unite your lives and to seek you happiness together.

You drink from the same cup to be reminded that you will share pain & pleasure, struggle and hope or the years of life are as a cup of wine poured out for you to drink. The cup of life contains within it, the sweet wine of happiness, joy, hope and delight. The same cup, at times, holds the bitter wine of disappointment, sorrow, grief & despair. Those who drink deeply of life invites the full range of experiences into their being.

This cup is symbolic of the pledges you have to make to one another to share together the fullness of life. As you drink from this cup, you acknowledge to one another that your lives, until this moment separate, have become one vessel into which all your sorrows & joys, all your hopes & fears, all your dreams & dreads, will be poured, & from which you will find mutual sustenance. The Unity Sand Ceremony

Bride & Groom & their mothers participating.

(Groom) and (Bride) today you are making a life-long commitment to share the rest of your lives with each other. Your relationship is symbolised through the pouring of these individual containers of sand; one, represents you, (Groom) all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, and the other represents you, (Bride) all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be. You each hold your separate containers of sand that represent your lives to this moment; individual and unique. As you now combine your sand together, your lives also join together as one family.
There are two women for whom words could never relay the gratitude in our bride and groom's hearts, their mothers. (Mothers' names) you have contributed so much to (bride and groom's names) lives and they wish to symbolically thank you by inviting you to join them in their sand ceremony.

We now invite the women whose contributions are immeasurable in the lives of our bride and groom, their mothers, to please come forward for the sand ceremony.

These four containers of sand represent the bride and groom and each family. You may now blend the sands together symbolising the uniting of the two families into one. I now ask that you both together tie a knot with this rope and as you are doing so, remember that this binding will be steadfast as will be your marriage.

The Candle Ceremony

The Unity Candle Ceremony is a lovely tradition which symbolises the joining of the couple and the two families.

The Unity Candle Ceremony symbolises, two lives becoming one.

There are a number of variances to the candle ceremony and it can be customised to your unique relationship.

Usually, two small candles burn throughout the ceremony, they symbolise the Bride and Groom. A third larger candle remains unlit during the ceremony, symbolising their life as one. Once the Bride and Groom have exchanged vows and rings, they move to the burning candles. Each takes a burning candle and together they light the third candle, symbolizing their desire to put their relationship centre and foremost, two becoming one.

The two smaller candles: The mothers of the Bride and Groom can light these candles, signifying that they are the persons that gave them light and love.

The Best Man and Maid of Honour can light the small candles. These two people represent the friends and family of the bride and groom. The people who have in one way or another prepared the Bride and Groom for each other.

It can also mean the uniting of the Bride and Groom, friends and family, especially when the parents of the bride and groom are no longer living or are not able to attend.

Blowing out of smaller candles: The Bride and Groom can choose to blow out the smaller candles, or leave them burning, to blow them out signifies two individuals united as one and promising to place the needs of the ?one? over individual needs. On the other hand, to not blow out these candles symbolizes two people remaining individuals, but committed to their union as one.
A sample of the vows for a Unity Candle Ceremony:

Bride & Groom before you exchange your rings, I ask that you perform a ritual which you will forever hold in your memory. Your marriage to each other means something very special. You are two loving people who are now joining as one & whilst each of your individual lives are important, your joined lives will fulfill each of your heart's desire.

This is a magical moment which represents the present & I now ask each of you to light the candles I hand to you. You will then exchange these candles signifying to each other that you are placing your lives in each other's keeping.

Please extinguish these candles which now brings to an end of your single lives & I request that you jointly light this new candle, the flame of which represents the special & mystical moment you become one. Even though the flame of this candle will be extinguished shortly, it will continue to burn brightly in your hearts.
